Course description: 

This presentation explores how professionals can support families of Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children in navigating identity, communication choices, and advocacy. Participants will learn how to present communication options without bias, encourage informed decision-making, and foster self-advocacy in children and caregivers.

15 minutes: Guiding Families Without Bias

20 minutes: Fostering Self-Advocacy in DHH Children

20 minutes: Partnering with Families for Empowered Advocacy


Learner outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the range of communication modalities used by Deaf and Hard of Hearing children

  2. Explain how to support families in making informed, child-centered communication decisions

  3. Identify strategies to foster self-advocacy and empowerment in DHH children and their caregivers

Instructor(s)

Jasmine Simmons

Dr. Jasmine Simmons is a DeafBlind audiologist, accessibility consultant, and children’s book author passionate about creating a more inclusive world. Born profoundly deaf and later diagnosed with Usher syndrome, she now uses her lived experience with dual sensory loss to advocate for accessibility in healthcare, education, and everyday life. Jasmine earned her Doctorate of Audiology from Central Michigan University and has worked with a wide range of families and professionals to improve services for children with hearing loss. She is the author of Extraordinary Jordyn and Her Bionic Ears, a children's book that celebrates the experiences of young cochlear implant users and promotes positive disability representation.
