Course description: This presentation provides definitions and descriptions of three domains of linguistic structure (phonology, morphology, syntax). Next, participants will be guided through an activity in which they undertake linguistic analysis of real child data for each of the three domains of linguistic structure. Because this is a pre-recorded lecture, participants are encouraged to pause the video and actually try to do the analyses independently before continuing the video and seeing the answers.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Define each domain of linguistic structure 
  2. Apply appropriate glossing practices to language sample analysis 
  3. Produce analyses of child language samples at the phonological, morphological, and syntactic levels

Instructor(s)

Leah Geer

Dr. Leah Geer is a professor of American Sign Language and Deaf Studies at California State University, Sacramento. She received her PhD in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and her Master's in Linguistics from Gallaudet University. Her current interests are in adult acquisition of phonetics and phonology in ASL.
