Course info

Course Description: This presentation will provide a more in-depth description of ASL phonology and how this information can be used clinically for SLPs, ASL specialists, or other early interventionists.

 

Agenda: 

15 minutes: Review of phonological concepts

15 minutes: Parameter (phoneme) identification activity 

10 minutes: Markedness: Definitions and relation to phonology

10 minutes: Applications of markedness to language acquisition 

 

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to recognize and describe ASL formational parameters (phonemes): construct examples of minimal pairs.
  2. Participants will be able to discuss the relationship of formational parameters to markedness.
  3. Participants will be able to implement principles of markedness and phonemic awareness in language intervention. 

Instructor(s)

Leah Geer

Dr. Leah Geer is a professor of American Sign Language and Deaf Studies at California State University, Sacramento. She received her PhD in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and her Master's in Linguistics from Gallaudet University. Her current interests are in adult acquisition of phonetics and phonology in ASL.
