Course info

Course Description: This workshop provides a brief recap of the syntax section of the previous webinar, ASL Linguistics for SLPs. It then builds on that with a more in-depth look at ASL syntax with particular attention to identifying words order patterns from real, natural data. How this is clinically useful will be discussed.

 

Agenda: 

15 minutes: Review of basic syntax 

15 minutes: Examination of various syntactic structures 

15 minutes: Understanding child language as it relates to syntax

15 minutes: Syntax analysis 

 

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to recognize and describe various ASL syntactic structures and features.
  2. Participants will be able to examine natural data to identify syntactic structures and patterns.
  3. Participants will be able to apply syntactic analysis to assess students, evaluate progress, and/or write goals for clinical practice. 

Instructor(s)

Leah Geer

Dr. Leah Geer is a professor of American Sign Language and Deaf Studies at California State University, Sacramento. She received her PhD in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and her Master's in Linguistics from Gallaudet University. Her current interests are in adult acquisition of phonetics and phonology in ASL.
