Course Description: This presentation will cover the lack of teacher preparedness with DHH students with additional disabilities, why and how it’s difficult to diagnose learning disabilities in Deaf students, and how to support Deaf Disabled students in the classroom. Appropriate accommodations and modifications will be discussed as well.

 

Agenda:

15 minutes: Diversity in the DHH student population, overlooked additional disabilities, IDEA and diagnosing learning disabilities in DHH students

30 minutes: Teacher preparedness, suggestions/strategies for supporting access to curriculum

15 minutes: Appropriate accommodations and modifications

Participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize that being Deaf is not the reason behind the academic struggles
  2. Explain why it’s difficult to diagnose learning disabilities in DHH students
  3. State take-away strategies to use in the classroom

Instructor(s)

Megan Wimberly

Megan Wimberly teaches English Language Arts to upper elementary deaf and hard of hearing students at Louisiana School for the Deaf. She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology with a minor is Sociology from Louisiana State University. She obtained a Masters of Science in Deaf Education from Lamar University and is currently a doctoral student at Lamar University in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education. Megan was born profoundly Deaf with Usher Syndrome.
