Beyond the Audiogram: Common Misconceptions about Audiology and Language Development

Course Description: This presentation will offer critical discussion of audiology concepts as related to the work of school-based speech-language pathologists. Frequently misunderstood aspects of audiologic test results and hearing device benefits/limitations will be emphasized. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and apply the presentation content through practical examples.
5 minutes: Introduction
15 minutes: Understanding audiologic test results
30 minutes: Understanding hearing device benefits and limitations
25 minutes: Applications for school-based speech-language pathologists
Participants will be able to:
- Describe what can and cannot be determined from audiologic test results
- Identify at least 3 benefits and limitations of hearing devices for language development
- Apply audiology concepts appropriately to a case sample of a deaf or hard of hearing child
