Course description: 

The workshop, Bridging the Language Gap, is designed to help individuals that work with the Deaf/Hard of Hearing in the academic setting. This presentation will focus on the role of the Speech Language pathologist and role of the deaf/hard of hearing teacher and how the two can work together to enhance the language development of their deaf/hard of hearing students. Different strategies will be presented that can be used in the school setting.

30 Minutes. Demonstration of strategies


Learner outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the roles of the teacher of the Deaf and the speech-language pathologist.

  2. Complete a Venn diagram to organize the roles of the TOD and SLP

  3. State different strategies that can be used in the school setting.

Instructor(s)

Keisha Lowery

Dr. Keisha Lowery has a degree in Special education and Deaf Studies from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. She earned her Doctorate of Educational Leadership and Management from St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens. Dr. Lowery has been a teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing for over 10 years in various classroom settings and ages. She has been part of the team to rewrite the certification exam for Deaf/Hard of Hearing for the state of Florida. She also has presented various conferences focusing on hearing loss and the inclusion of students with disabilities in the mainstream classroom. She was also a 2017 and 2018 Florida Educators of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (FEDHH) Grant recipient. The grant was used to start a transition camp for elementary students that are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and transitioning to mainstream middle school. She currently words a virtual consultant and Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing in multiple states and and Adjunct professor at Ball State University.

Stephanie Bertucci

Stephanie Bertucci has a Master's degree in Communicative Disorders and an Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida. She also completed the interpreter training program at Hillsborough Community College. She worked as a CCC-SLP serving the D/HH population with Orange County Public schools for 20 years. She is fluent in American Sign Language and has worked with students of all ages, abilities, and methods/modes of communication. She is an internship supervisor for graduate students and has trained numerous students to work with the D/HH population.
