Course info

Course description: This session is for interpreters and interpreting students interested in working in the medical field. We will review the definitions of medical abbreviations and word etymologies so they can have a better understanding of medical jargon and feel comfortable enough to interpret for Deaf patients.


Agenda:

5 minutes: Introduction

45 minutes: Medical abbreviations

30 minutes: Word etymology

10 minutes: Practice scenarios

Participants will be able to:

  1. Develop a familiarity with medical jargon
  2. Develop a better understanding of medical abbreviations
  3. Break down complex terms by prefixes/roots/suffixes

Instructor(s)

Bethany Baker

Bethany Baker, BSN, RN, was born Deaf to a hearing family and went to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind (FSDB). She then attended Gallaudet University and earned a History degree. She went on to earn her BSN at the University of North Florida and is the first Deaf RN in Florida. Her goal is to inspire more Deaf people to join the healthcare field.
