Course information

Course description: Dynamic assessment of the DHH individual is key for authentic representation of a person’s language abilities. One evidence-based dynamic assessment tool is the Mediated Learning Experience (MLE). This course will outline the definition of MLE and how it applies to assessment of the DHH population, and provide a testing protocol for SLPs and other professionals for implementation with the DHH population. This course may be useful for professional development in: differential diagnosis of language difference versus disorder, language deprivation, multilingual DHH individuals, and Deaf+/DeafDisabled and those with comorbidities.


Agenda:

30 minutes: Defining MLE methodology and purpose

30 minutes: Modifications for MLE use with DHH populations

15 minutes: Suggesting a testing protocol for a variety of DHH profiles

15 minutes: Discussion of materials and report writing


Learner outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Modify MLE techniques for the DHH population

  2. Use MLE for diagnostic purposes of the DHH population

  3. Have access to MLE resources for effective use of this tool

Instructor(s)

Marlene Medina Nero

Marlene is a practicing speech-language pathologist in Nevada. Her primary area of expertise is working with the Deaf and hard of hearing, specifically ASL-English and ASL-English-Spanish children and adults. Marlene identifies as Mexican-American or Latine, a heritage speaker of Spanish, and fluent in American Sign Language. She works in the elementary school setting, home health, and telepractice.
