Course Description: This presentation will cover an introductory, basic overview of the cochlear implantation (CI) process and the various myths that are commonly observed. Participants will be presented with myths and facts from the perspective of a patient- and family-centered approach, as well as factors to consider regarding cochlear implantation, including rehabilitation, expectations, and decision-making.

Agenda:

30 minutes: Cochlear implant basics, overview of candidacy evaluation, surgery, activation, and rehabilitation

60 minutes: Myths and variable “outcomes”

15 minutes: Factors to consider regarding implantation

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Participants will be able to demonstrate understanding of the cochlear implantation process
  2. Participants will be able to discern between facts and myths related to CIs
  3. Participants will be able to participate in shared and informed decision-making

Lilach Saperstein

Dr. Lilach Saperstein is an audiologist and parent educator working with families of deaf and hard of hearing children to integrate their emotional journey with information and resources. She is the host of the All About Audiology podcast, which offers personal interviews related to audiology, communication, parenting, connection, and advocacy. She lives in Israel where she and her husband are raising three bilingual daughters.
