Course information

Course description: This session will be an overview of the Family-Centered Early Intervention Deaf/Hard of Hearing (FCEI-DHH) Principles, published in a special issue in 2024. It will introduce and summarize the Foundation Principles, Support Principles, and Structure Principles - collectively the 10 FCEI-DHH Principles. These Principles have been agreed upon by an international consensus panel, including DHH leaders, family leaders, direct support professionals, and researchers. Whether working in Early Intervention or providing direct supports for young children who are DHH and their caregivers, the presentation valuable information to a wide variety of professionals. The presentation will guide professionals to incorporate current 'best practices' in their work.

Agenda:

10 minutes: Overview of FCEI International Consensus processes & context 

10 minutes: Introduction to the Guiding Values and Cultural & Global Implications of FCEI 

10 minutes: Foundation, Support, and Structure Principles 

30 minutes: Engagement activity - Identify how Principles interact with one's work

30 minutes: FCEI Recommendations for Professionals


Learner outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the Principles, including the three separate Principles sections and the rationale for them 

  2. State a minimum of three changes one could make to their practice to better align with the FCEI recommendations

  3. Identify a minimum of two action steps that could be taken in one's program or system to support family-centeredness based on the FCEI Principles

Amy Szarkowski

Amy Szarkowski, PhD, is a psychologist who specializes in working with, understanding, and improving the lives of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and their families. She worked clinically with this population for nearly two decades, providing psychological services and working as a member of an interprofessional team to support families and children who are DHH. Szarkowski is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Community Inclusion at the University of Massachusetts Boston, as well as Faculty for the LEND program (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities) at Boston Children’s Hospital.
