Course information

Course description: This presentation will cover evidence-based practice, critical thinking, and analytic inquiry for speech-language pathologists working with children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). It will go in-depth on concepts in neurolinguistics and holistic treatment, as well as how to apply these concepts to our practice with this population. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how to detect pseudoscience, how to self-reflect on their own practice, and how to serve DHH children in a way that maximizes success and reduces harm.


Agenda:

20 minutes: Neuroplasticity and critical periods

20 minutes: First language (L1) foundation

20 minutes: Common Underlying Proficiency (CUP)

15 minutes: Using a strength-based approach and holistic and person-centered care

15 minutes: Evidence and critical thinking, detecting pseudoscience



Learner outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Name three ways they can self-reflect on their own practice with DHH children
  2. State the principles of neuroplasticity and critical periods
  3. Explain what Common Underlying Proficiency (CUP) is
  4. State three strategies for detecting pseudoscience in this part of the field
  5. Give three examples of holistic and person-centered care related to DHH children

Instructor(s)

Kimberly Ofori-Sanzo

Dr. Ofori-Sanzo is a speech-language pathologist and the founder of Language First. She received her B.A. in Psychology and in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Vermont in 2010, her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from Gallaudet University in 2012, and her Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology (SLPD) in 2022. She is also a board-certified specialist in child language (BCS-CL) through the American Board of Child Language and Language Disorders and has 9 years of experience working at a school for the Deaf.
