Course info

Course Description: This webinar will discuss essential medical/healthcare words and phrases, translated into ASL for healthcare professionals to know in order to communicate with Deaf patients. The webinar will also discuss cultural repressions and beliefs regarding healthcare in the Deaf community, specifically with regards to accessibility and communication barriers.

 

Agenda:

10 minutes: Discussion of Deaf culture and healthcare

10 minutes: Statistics and how medical signs can impact care

40 minutes: Medical signs and phrases

 

Learner Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. State at least 3 newly learned medical signs/phrases
  2. Explain new knowledge about how to serve Deaf patients 
  3. Explain how the relationship between the Deaf community and the healthcare system can improve in order to provide better care for Deaf patients

Instructor(s)

Bethany Baker

Bethany Baker, BSN, RN, was born Deaf to a hearing family and went to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind (FSDB). She then attended Gallaudet University and earned a History degree. She went on to earn her BSN at the University of North Florida and is the first Deaf RN in Florida. Her goal is to inspire more Deaf people to join the healthcare field.
