Course information

Course description: This presentation will provide an overview of the Science of Reading (SoR) and how its principles may or may not apply to deaf and hard of hearing students. It will review the variety of factors that may impact a deaf student in their journey of learning to read, and briefly cover supports and curricula created for deaf students. The presentation will provide attendees with suggestions for strategic, interactive reading instruction and ideas for tweaking SoR-based principles through an ASL-English bilingual lens. 10 minutes: What is the Science of Reading (SoR)?

20 minutes: Language deprivation and how it impacts language acquisition and ultimately, reading

20 minutes: Reading supports and curricula created for deaf education

20 minutes: How SoR applies to deaf students with varying linguistic profiles

20 minutes: Ideas for tweaking SoR-based principles through an ASL-English bilingual lens

Instructor(s)

Kimberly Ofori-Sanzo

Dr. Ofori-Sanzo is a speech-language pathologist and the founder of Language First. She received her B.A. in Psychology and in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Vermont in 2010, her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from Gallaudet University in 2012, and her Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology (SLPD) in 2022. She is also a board-certified specialist in child language (BCS-CL) through the American Board of Child Language and Language Disorders and has 9 years of experience working at a school for the Deaf.
