Course information

Course description: Language deprivation is the lack of language exposure during a child’s age of acquisition which impacts language development, academic success, and cognitive capabilities. Many Deaf children in the United States public school system are graduating without the readiness skills needed for post-secondary endeavors. This workshop seeks to identify the impact of language deprivation, provide instruction & language development strategies for school staff, understand the process of creating a comprehensive IEP/IFSP, and applications for creating a culturally responsive classroom.

Learner outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the impact of language deprivation on a Deaf child

  2. Identify at least one strategy they can bring to their school to provide positive outcomes for a student 

  3. Identify at least one strategy to build a culturally responsive classroom that builds trust and reduces anxiety

Instructor(s)

Morgan Lee

A native of Virginia, Morgan attended the Deaf education master’s program at Boston University. They also completed a graduate certificate program at Gallaudet University focusing on teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing students with additional disabilities. To build leadership skills, Morgan completed Harvard Business School Online's Educational Leadership Certificate Program. Morgan has worked in Massachusetts, Washington D.C., and Virginia as a teacher and administrator in public, private, and public separate schools since 2013. They also serve as a freelance ASL interpreter in the Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland area. Morgan is currently a doctoral student in American University’s Education Leadership and Policy program focusing on the impacts of language deprivation and how public schools must better serve Deaf children, especially those from marginalized groups.
