Course info

Course Description: This presentation will cover why it’s so difficult to write goals for Deaf students who speak American Sign Language (ASL). It will provide an overview of the Language Skill Hierarchy for Deaf children with language deprivation and how clinicians can use it to write appropriate and achievable goals. Accurate IEP writing will be discussed, including how to write present levels that correctly represent a Deaf child. Finally, we will review examples of goals written for Deaf children with language deprivation who speak ASL and discuss how to individualize them to the child.

 

Agenda:

15 minutes: Challenges of IEP and goal writing for deaf students

15 minutes: Overview of the Language Skill Hierarchy and how that can help us write goals

30 minutes: Writing accurate present levels and goals

15 minutes: Goals for older students

Instructor(s)

Kimberly Ofori-Sanzo

Dr. Ofori-Sanzo is a speech-language pathologist and the founder of Language First. She received her B.A. in Psychology and in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Vermont in 2010, her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from Gallaudet University in 2012, and her Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology (SLPD) in 2022. She is also a board-certified specialist in child language (BCS-CL) through the American Board of Child Language and Language Disorders and has 9 years of experience working at a school for the Deaf.
