Course description: Many professionals do not understand the role of educational interpreters or how to best utilize interpreters. This workshop focuses on how interpreters can successfully work with professionals in the school systems. Interpreters will learn tips and strategies on how to work with other professionals because they are so crucial in making education and services accessible for DHH students.


Agenda:

5 minutes: Introduction

10 minutes: General education teachers

15 minutes: Social workers, school psychologists

15 minutes: OTs, PTs, DCF/CPS

15 minutes: Conclusions/wrap-up


Learner Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. State the roles of interpreters and other professionals

  2. State at least one tip/strategy when working with different professionals to successfully interpret for DHH students



Instructor(s)

Jennifer Francisco

Jennifer Francisco is the Educational Interpreter Project Coordinator for Florida and works with all K-12 educational interpreters across the state. She holds certifications in ASLTA, Elementary Education, Reading Education, Deaf Education, and an endorsement in ESOL. She is passionate about Deaf Education and providing the best access to education and language for all Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students. Jennifer believes in working with all staff members who work with DHH students because we all share the same goal of providing the best for our students.
