Course information

Course description: This presentation will discuss a variety of considerations and intervention ideas for Speech Language Pathologists, ASL Specialists, and other professionals to consider when providing communication-based services to middle school and high school DHHDBDD (Deaf Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind, Deaf Disabled) students. Throughout this presentation, professionals will discuss considerations to providing client-led services, strategies to use in intervention with middle school and high school age clients, and a variety of intervention ideas to keep your speech and language sessions functional and effective. Participants will leave with the ability to use bilingual, language-based strategies to support middle school and high school aged students with a variety of communication needs.

10 minutes: Introduction

15 minutes: Who are these students?

60 minutes: Intervention ideas and functional activities

15 minutes: Review of key elements and strategies


Learner outcomes: 

Participants will be able to:

  1. State at least one example of what is important to consider when developing a plan to provide student-led speech and language services to MS/HS DHH students

  2. Explain different intervention strategies for middle school and high school DHH students.

  3. Describe how to use intervention strategies within speech and language sessions with middle school and high school DHH students

Kelsey Kirkpatrick

Kelsey Kirkpatrick (she/her) is a bilingual ASL/English speech-language pathologist from Minnesota. She has spent the entirety of her 5 year career working as an SLP at residential schools for the Deaf and recently opened her private practice: Hands On Speech and Language Services, LLC. with her colleague and friend, Amanda Bleed. When not at work, Kelsey enjoys visiting national parks, discovering new coffee shops, and training her Alaskan Husky, Earl.
