Course information

Course description: Most foreign students who travel to America go through a lot of struggles when it comes to communication, as they use very different signs. This communication barrier may even more so affect students who attend short-term fellowships and other short-term programs. I emigrated to America in 2017 and started learning American Sign Language (ASL). I started offering my volunteer service as an interpreter for the deaf to Kenyan students at Gallaudet University and Mandela Washington Fellowship. I still volunteer from time to time to help bridge the communication gap. This webinar will discuss how to help Kenyan students/fellows acquire basic ASL skills ahead of the school academic year or fellowship.

Agenda:

10 minutes: My story: what inspired me to help Kenyan students integrate into American culture

10 minutes: Challenges that Kenyan students face

10 minutes: Strategies to help Kenyan students, practicing KSL

Learner outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the differences between KSL and ASL
  2. Explain the challenges that Kenyan students/fellows encounter
  3. State strategies to help Kenyan deaf students/fellows break communication barriers
