Course information

Course description: This presentation will review what is currently known about sign language development in deaf children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In particular, the presenter will detail how language presents in children with ASD, how sign language development may differ from spoken language development in such children, and particular red flags to be aware of. Finally, the presenter will discuss the special challenges of adequate language exposure for deaf children with ASD as well as the danger of language deprivation for these children.

Instructor(s)

Aaron Shield

Aaron Shield, PhD is an Associate Professor of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He is a linguist who has been studying the language and cognitive development of deaf and hard of hearing children with Autism Spectrum Disorder since 2007. He holds a PhD in linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and completed postdoctoral training in psychology at the University of Chicago and Boston University. He is an associate editor of the journal Autism & Developmental Language Impairments.
