Course description: This presentation will examine how educators and parents can support the language and communication needs of d/Deaf and hard of hearing learners with disabilities. Theoretical approaches and frameworks will guide the discussion and allow participants to reflect on their current and future practice. The presenters will then provide resources and strategies that can support language and communication of d/Deaf and hard of hearing learners with disabilities, followed by a question-and-answer session to conclude the webinar.


Agenda:

10 minutes: What does it mean to be deaf or hard of hearing with a disability and challenges associated with identification

10 minutes: Asset-based approach and educational frameworks

60 minutes: Language and communication across exceptionalities

10 minutes: Integration and application

5 minutes: Conclusion

Instructor(s)

Joanna Cannon

Dr. Joanna E. Cannon is an Associate Professor in the Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education department at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Cannon has 9 years' experience as an itinerant and resource teacher of deaf and hard of hearing students and is the parents of a deaf adult. She serves as the coordinator of the Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing graduate program and her areas of research include literacy assessment, learners with complex needs, and immigrant families.

Caroline Guardino

Dr. Caroline Guardino is a Professor of Exceptional Student and Deaf Education at the University of North Florida. Her research interests involve technology and deafness as well as inclusive learning environments for students with disabilities. She enjoys teaching courses in both Exceptional Student and Deaf Education as this combined knowledge provides a platform for her passion to provide professionals with better strategies and resources when working with students who are Deaf with Disabilities and/or Deaf Multilingual Learners.

Peter Paul

Dr. Peter V. Paul is a Professor of Special Education, focus on d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) children, in Educational Studies at the Ohio State University. He has a bilateral, profound loss and wears bilateral cochlear implants, and is also the father of an adults son who has Down syndrome and autism. One of his major professional responsibilities includes teacher preparation in the education of d/Dhh students. His research interests involve the areas of English language and literacy, and he is the current editor of the American Annals of the Deaf.
