Course information

Course description: This presentation will provide an overview of the clinical features of language deprivation and its impact on deaf individuals. A brief look at the latest research will be provided to illustrate the neurobiology of language deprivation. A case description will be used to discuss the causes of language deprivation in the era of universal newborn hearing screening and cochlear implants. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of potential solutions and consideration of how to prevent language deprivation in professional practice with deaf and hard of hearing children and their families.

Instructor(s)

Julia Hecht

Julia L. Hecht is a general pediatrician in Albuquerque, NM, who focused her clinical career on providing primary care to deaf and hard of hearing children, and children of the Deaf community. She has worked in advocacy, policy development, and public health regarding deaf and hard of hearing children at the local, state, and national levels. She created a trilingual tricultural medical home in Albuquerque called the Deaf Access Program where ASL, English, and Spanish were valued and used. She served under two Deaf superintendents as the Medical Director and school physician at the NM School for the Deaf in Santa Fe, NM. She currently is currently retired from clinical practice and serves on subcommittees and authoring groups at the American Academy of Pediatrics providing expertise on the care of deaf and hard of hearing children and the issues that impact them and their families.
