Course information

Course description: My dissertation research looks at how hearing parents with deaf/hard of hearing children come to understand what deafness means through their early intervention experience. I will explain my dissertation research and findings and use it to guide our learning and reflection as providers. We will examine our own interactions with deaf/hard of hearing individuals and see how our actions convey certain beliefs about deafness and determine what we might need to adjust to improve the quality of our practice.

  1. Define the Social Construction of Deafness/Disability theory
  2. Summarize the research findings
  3. Use the research findings to inform their own practice with deaf/hard of hearing clients including: what they believe, how it impacts their practice, and decide what they might need to adjust

Instructor(s)

Bettie Petersen

Bettie earned her M.Ed in Deaf Education Early Intervention from Utah State University and her PhD in Educational Linguistics from the University of New Mexico. She has been working for the New Mexico School for the Deaf for 16 years in Early Intervention. She was fortunate to spend a year at the University of Connecticut as a postdoctoral research associate in 2022. As a parent herself, her passion is supporting parents and children as they realize their potential together through shared language and meaningful experiences.
