Course Description: This presentation will discuss the benefit and importance of collaboration for SLPs in a deaf education setting. It will cover the differences in approach, perspectives, and roles among varying professionals and provide strategies for facilitating good collaboration. Real examples of interdisciplinary collaboration will be provided along with recommendations for potential teamwork opportunities. 


Agenda:

5 minutes: Definition and benefits of collaboration

10 minutes: Therapy vs. pedagogy and differing perspectives

15 minutes: Scope of practice and potential roles

15 minutes: Push-in strategies

15 minutes: Real examples of collaboration 

10 minutes: Other strategies and recommendations

Instructor(s)

Kimberly Ofori-Sanzo

Dr. Ofori-Sanzo is a speech-language pathologist and the founder of Language First. She received her B.A. in Psychology and in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Vermont in 2010, her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from Gallaudet University in 2012, and her Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology (SLPD) in 2022. She is also a board-certified specialist in child language (BCS-CL) through the American Board of Child Language and Language Disorders and has 9 years of experience working at a school for the Deaf.
