Course information

Course description: This presentation will provide a detailed description of a theoretical model created to promote collaboration among professionals, family members, and the deaf or hard of hearing child in language choice decision making. The Fundamental Framework for DHH Children was created by Kinya Embry, a speech-language pathologist and doctoral student. How the framework came about, each component of the framework, and its intended use will be throughout discussed and explained during this presentation. 


Agenda:

10 minutes: Background/purpose

10 minutes:: Introduction to the ICF Model

20 minutes: Introduction to Rosenbaum and Gorter’s F-Words in Childhood Disability

50 minutes: Introduction to the Fundamental Framework for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children, description of each component, F-Words and child statements

10 minutes: Application and intended use of the framework, explanation of supplemental table


Learner outcomes: 

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the components of The Fundamental Framework for DHH Children
  2. Describe how each component encompasses the DHH child’s perspective and experience
  3. Explain how the use of this model can decrease bias in the decision-making process regarding language and communication

Instructor(s)

Kinya Embry

Kinya is a speech-language pathologist who received both her bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in American Sign Language and her master's in Speech-Language Pathology from Western Kentucky State University. She worked at a school for the Deaf for two years and is now a PhD candidate, focusing on language development in DHH kids and the impact of ASL as a first language.
