Course description: The purpose of this presentation is to dig deeper into the oppression and inaccessibility of healthcare for the Deaf community. We will discuss the statistics and personal accounts about why Deaf people have more health issues and less preventative care. Then, we will discuss how we as advocates can reframe the system as inclusive and provide more education to medical professionals.

Instructor(s)

Bethany Baker

Bethany Baker, BSN, RN, was born Deaf to a hearing family and went to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind (FSDB). She then attended Gallaudet University and earned a History degree. She went on to earn her BSN at the University of North Florida and is the first Deaf RN in Florida. Her goal is to inspire more Deaf people to join the healthcare field.
