Course information

Course description: Speech-language pathology (SLP) programs include rigorous training in the structure of oral languages and the mechanisms through which they are produced. Most cover only fleetingly, if at all, comparable training on signed languages. This presentation draws on what SLPs already know and applies it to signed languages, helping them to use their training to effectively assess and treat language disorders in signed languages. This presentation will benefit SLPs (relatively) new to working with ASL-using deaf children, or who hope to work with this population in the future.

Agenda:

20 minutes: Domains of linguistic structure

20 minutes: Aspects of linguistics specific to the signed modality

20 minutes: Assessing deaf children’s ASL skills (in brief) to identify areas of need

20 minutes: Setting therapy goals

20 minutes: Treatment tips and tricks

Learner outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast aspects of linguistics between the signed and oral modalities

  2. Characterize the areas of need in deaf children’s language skills, given case study examples

  3. Determine appropriate treatment goals and activities to address identified areas of need
