Course Description: This presentation will cover the role of fingerspelling and how it benefits Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children in early language acquisition and literacy acquisition. It will discuss how essential the role of fingerspelling is in fostering early language acquisition and how it provides an important link between ASL and English in pre-literacy development among young DHH children.

15 minutes: What is fingerspelling?

15 minutes: Deaf Epistemology Framework

30 minutes: Language acquisition and literacy development

15 minutes: Roles of fingerspelling

Participants will be able to:

  1. State the importance of natural, accessible language at home
  2. Explain how young DHH children acquire and learn language without sounds
  3. Apply techniques and strategies for using fingerspelling as a link between ASL and written English

Instructor(s)

Heidi MacGlaughlin

Dr. MacGlaughlin is a faculty member of the Deaf Studies and Deaf Education department at Lamar University. She received her doctoral degree from Lamar University in May 2018. Her research interests center on language and literacy among young Deaf children. She also directs her research on ASL/English blingual education, research ethics, and teaching preparation.
