Course info

Course Description: Visual schedules come in many shapes and sizes! In this presentation, you’ll learn how to support communication transition and independence through the use of an individualized visual schedule for Deaf Disabled students. It is not as complicated some may think and the benefits are endless. We will discuss what a visual schedule is, the steps to take when creating one, and how to use it after it is made.

 

Agenda:

15 minutes: Intro to visual schedules and why they’re a great starting point for many Deaf Disabled students

30 minutes: Communication and schedules, both concrete and abstract, emergent proficient communicators

15 minutes: How to make visual schedules

 

Learner Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe at least 3 types of visual schedules
  2. State the benefits of using visual schedules to support communication
  3. State 2 of the 3 questions teams can use to get started with visual schedules

Instructor(s)

Krista Lewis

Krista Lewis, M.S.Ed., is a Deaf and Nontraditional Communication Professional within Pennsylvania's Office of Developmental Programs. Krista graduated from Bloomsburg University with a major in Early Childhood Education, a minor in Sign Language, and a concentration in Deaf Education. She received her Master's in Deaf Education from Saint Joseph's University. Previously, Krista taught Deaf, hard of hearing, and DeafBlind students. Now, she supports Deaf individuals with developmental disabilities and complex communication needs.
