Course information

Course description: 

The session will begin with an overview of a capstone project completed as part of a graduate certificate program at Gallaudet University. The presentation will highlight several key products developed to support a smoother transition for Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children from early intervention to school placement. One of these products, Training Your DHH Child to Use an Interpreter, will be explored in greater depth. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in experiential activities designed to help students build the skills needed to work effectively with interpreters.


Agenda:

30 minutes: Overview of capstone project

30 minutes: Products generated from the project

10 minutes: Transition tips

20 minutes: Training your child to use an interpreter: demo/participation activities 


Learner outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the difficulties that can arise when DHH children transition from EI services to school

  2. State tips to encourage a better transition experience

  3. Describe specific activities to help a young DHH child learn to use an interpreter

Instructor(s)

Paula Mowery

Paula Mowery is a licensed educational interpreter and a licensed teacher for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in the public school classroom. She advocates for and supports her students in their bilingual/bimodal education. Currently, Paula works in the Sevier County Schools at Catlettsburg Elementary STEM School. Paula has a BA from Maryville College with a major in their Interpreter Training Program. Her MEd is from Texas Christian University. Recently, she completed a graduate certificate from Gallaudet University in Early Intervention. She has been a presenter for the Early Childhood Conference ETSU, Bedrock Literacy Online conference, Family Learning Day at a local school for the Deaf, and provided professional development for early childhood teachers in public schools.
