Course information

Course description: 

Literacy is a paramount concern for parents, teachers, pupil personnel service providers, administrators, and everyone else in the Deaf Education world. This presentation will discuss the foundations of a literacy focus in Deaf Education that requires different individuals to work together in supporting the language and literacy development of students who are deaf/hard of hearing. We will talk about the roles of ASL and English with students and providers in building language and literacy and share ideas of how collaboration can bring us outside of our silos.

15 Minutes. What is literacy?

30 Minutes. The Deaf Reading Rope as a framework for literacy. 

15 Minutes. Other Deaf literacy frameworks, such as LAAWs.

15 Minutes. What can teachers do?

15 Minutes. What can providers do?

15 Minutes. Collaboration and Unity for Literacy Instruction


Learner outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain frameworks for literacy that apply to D/HH students.

  2. Adjust their personal approach to literacy instruction given the frameworks and perspectives of this workshop.

  3. Develop plans for collaborating with other educational professionals to build greater literacy systems for D/HH students.

Instructor(s)

Nathan Harrison

Dr. Nathan E. Harrison is a lecturer in the Department of Deaf Education at the NTID/RIT, focusing on digital teaching and learning, D/HH pedagogy, bilingual instruction, and Deaf Educational Leadership. He has degrees in Math & Science Education (BS, Utah State University), Bi-Bi Deaf Education (MEd, Utah State University), and Educational Leadership (EdD, University of New Mexico). He began his career as a math teacher at the New Mexico School for the Deaf, later serving as Assistant Principal. Nathan then held leadership roles at the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind, including Assistant Director at JMS (Salt Lake City), Curriculum Director for USD, and Director of the Elizabeth DeLong School of the Deaf (Springville/Provo). In 2024, he transitioned to higher education to support educator preparation and develop a Deaf Educational Leadership program. He is the husband to Mackenzie and father to three children.
