Course information

Course description: Participants will learn about the foundations of who Deaf English Language Learners (ELL) are, in various school settings across the United States, and practical strategies for working with this population within these different educational settings. Considerations for student language levels (across all of their languages), hearing levels, amplification, familial support, and educational settings and available tools will be discussed. 


Agenda:

15 minutes: Foundations of ELLs

30 minutes: Strategies for Signing Deaf/Hard of Hearing ELLs

10 minutes: Strategies for Oral Deaf/Hard of Hearing ELLs

5 minutes: Strategies for Bimodal Deaf/Hard of Hearing ELLs

30 minutes: Practical Application: Practice Session

Instructor(s)

Natalie Delgado

Dr. Natalie J. Delgado is the statewide outreach director of Deaf Education at the Louisiana School for the Deaf and has taught from birth through 12th grade, as well as at the university level. She received her EdD in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education from Lamar University, where she also received her master's degree in Deaf Education. Dr. Delgado continues to conduct research with her colleagues, centering her work mainly on early intervention, early childhood language and identity development, and Deaf critical theory.

Ivette Perez

Mrs. Ivette Pérez is a hearing early intervention outreach instructor at the Louisiana School for the Deaf. She received her bachelor’s degree in Special Education with a track in Deaf Studies and a master’s degree in Deaf Education from the University of North Florida. She taught Deaf and Hard of Hearing English Language Learners (ELLs) in PreK-12th for 11 years, as well as hearing adult ELLs. Recently, Pérez graduated from Gallaudet with a professional certificate in the Infant, Toddler, and Family Program (ITF) centering her work around Latino/e families with Deaf infants and toddlers.
